When Annie Leibovitz began shooting portraits professionally in 1970 there were no digital cameras, and the notion that you might take and share photos using a handheld telephone would have seemed like a sci-fi writer's fantasy, rather than a daily reality.
Nevertheless, in our new book Annie Leibovitz: Portraits 2005–2016 the brilliant US photographer captures the spirit of our latter-day selfie culture.
This photograph, taken in 2014, pictures two of the world's most popular social media stars of that moment - Kanye West and Kim Kardashian – in the act of selfie-style portraiture. Leibovitiz's image, taken shortly after Kim and Kanye's wedding and the birth of their daughter North – also pictured – is a wonderful clear shot of what can be, at times, a hugely distortive image-making process.

Kim, Kourtney and Khloe Kardashian have done countless photo shoots over the years. But they must have been thrilled to be snapped by world famous photographer Annie Leibovitz, who has shot everyone from John Lennon and Yoko Ono to the Queen.

“What an amazing day!” Kim wrote on her blog after the shoot. “We shot with the living legend herself, Annie Leibovitz! I swear this was such an eye opening day.” It was for the sisters’ advertising campaign to promote their new clothing line, Kardashian Kollection for Sears. The ladies are seen lounging on a sofa whilst they pout for the camera before getting vamped up in various leopard-print outfits for another shot.
This is the latest in a long line of business ventures for the glamorous entrepreneurs. Their empire already consists of several reality television shows, clothing boutiques, perfumes, a best-selling book and an array of endorsement deals.
