Synopsis
[edit]The book opens in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1874. Little Jack is born on the coldest day ever, which causes his heart to be frozen solid, requiring a replacement. The makeshift Doctor, Madeleine, who provides midwifery and medical services to the poor and the desperate of Edinburgh, grafts a cuckoo clock to his heart of flesh and blood in order to save it. Due to Madeleine's "clientele" the children that she delivers are sometimes unwanted, and so she puts them up for adoption to good parents. Unfortunately, nobody wants Jack because of his strange clock heart, and so he ends up living with Madeleine as his adoptive mother.
