Gandhi's First Principle: God as Truth
Before exploring the paths in more detail, it will be helpful for comparison to address Gandhi's conception of the divine, just as we did Ramana's ("WW," pp. 5-6). Gandhi's characterization of his desire "to see God face to face" might initially suggest a personal view of the divine (is it not persons who have faces?). However, it soon becomes plain that Gandhi was speaking metaphoricallyhe prefers to see God as Truth:
For me, truth is the sovereign principle, which includes numerous other principles. This truth is not only truthfulness in word, but truthfulness in thought also, and not only the relative truth of our conception, but the Absolute Truth, the Eternal Principle, that is God. There are innumerable definitions of God, because his manifestations are innumerable. . . . But I worship God as Truth only I have not yet found Him, but I am seeking after Him. Who wanted Mahatma Gandhi dead?
His is an unlikely muse. It is not a beautiful woman or a scenic place. Instead, author Makarand R Paranjape professes that he has been “living Bapu’s life and thoughts for decades now.” So a book on was always on the cards, but what exactly it would be about came much later, in the form of his new book The Death and Afterlife of Mahatma Gandhi. Before you groan about the tired choice of subject, Paranjape hastens to interject that his is an innovative tome, “both in style and substance.” When a professor of English tells you that, it’s easy to believe him. Especially when he is also a poet, columnist, and has novels (The Narrator, Body Offering) to his credit.
As Paranjape puts it, Mahatma, or great spirit, may actually be defined as someone whose afterlife is greater than his life. Starting from what he calls the “murder of Mahatma”, he goes on to question who really killed Gandhi, hoping to entice a new set of readers with a different ‘angle’. “The life and the death of Gandhi are two very separate things,” he says. “We talk a lot about the life, but almost nothing about the death.”
